There are two separate issues here. Don’t mess them up together.
1. Common property
In some states, it takes two person's income to buy and maintain a house. The house you have now it is your wife and children's primary home. The judge wills grand her request for the best of child interest and tax payer's interest. You can put the lien on the house, but you cannot sell it until kids turn to 18. Think about this way, if you owe a lot of medical bills, they cannot take your house also. It is protected by Federal bankrupt law.There are many men have to live in apartments after divorce if they don't make much. that is the fact.

2. Child support and alimony
This can be modified every year. The Child support is enforced. You cannot do anything if you don't want to go to jail. The alimony is kind of enforced also if you pay the child support and alimony in the same time. The state attorney general will take care of them.
