theft law issues help!!!!

我的一個朋友最近去商店買東西的時候，有一樣東西放在在另一個商店買的袋子裏出來的時候忘記check out了，結果被發現了，要送count, 好像police也要參與，東西不值錢30-40加元，不知道這種情況會有什麽樣的懲罰，後果會怎樣？我們現在都很著急，剛來加拿大不到一年，有沒有大蝦指點一下呀？ 謝謝！！！！！！
