about collection company

Last year tenants were evicted and owned me over $3000.
I hired a collection company tried to collect the money but I never thought I could get money back. I received their statement for sometime but they stopped sending me statement.
Today one lady called asks me my email and also said they went to court with my tenants and started collecting money from them. So I was happy, finally I could recover from the big lose.
But after I read the email from them I was shocked that they received total over $1600 from my tenants since Jan this year. I even didn't know anything about this and I haven't received any single dollas.
Is this the good practice or is this even legal?
