to become a patent agent, you need to pass the Patent Agent Registration Exam, http://www.uspto.gov/go/dcom/olia/oed/examregist.htm.

People usually refer to it as the "patent bar." But really, it is not a "bar exam." it is so much easier than a bar exam, there is virtually no comparison to it. you don't need any special knowledge of the law in order to pass the patent bar. the test is mainly focused on whether you can find the relevant provision in the patent prosecution manual, i.e., you ability to search through a book using the Acrobat Reader. It's like the test you took to apply for the driver's license, only it is 6 hours long. Pass that exam is only the beginning. That means you are allowed to drive. But only god knows how well you drive.
