how to collect owned salary

My previous company (a small company) owned me about $40,00 salary. I hired a lawyer to sue the CEO and VP personally. They first tried to negotiate and settle with me. No agreement made. I got a default judgement since they did not show up on the court.
Now how do I collect money? my lawyer told me wait for one year (from the default judgement date) before start to collect money. Why do I need to wait for one year? One day, my lawyer told me a escrow company contacted him since the VP trying to refinance this house and they(escrow comapny) found the judgement against the VP. I thought I might see some money coming in, but the VP did not do the refinance.
Anybody has any idea how do I collect money?
