I think you should call the billing apartment of the hospital. It is weird that they sent your bill to collection company without trying to collect from you first.

This once happened to me. Basically, an out-of-network doctor charged me for the process I did in an in-network hospital. I called the billing apartment of that doctor quite a few times. It lasted over half year. The doctor's office finally accepted payment from the insurance company, not charging me extra.
