Your H1b status is lost by the day you lost job.

By the law, your company have to report to USCIS. You need leave US or change the status at the day you lost your job.
USCIS may allow you transfer H1B within a reasonable time period. if your spouse is in H1, you can ask he/her company for H4. if you apply H4, you need a new H1 for your new job. As you may know, Cuurrent H1B is all used. New one is from Oct. 2009.
