ask help with my dad's airticket

Please help.
My dad have a round way airticket. He came to american on April, from Beijing to Chicago, the Chicago to a small town in OH. Since he has high blood pressure, and did not feel good, so we went to Chicago to pick him up and drive back home.
A few days ago, I call the United airline and was told his ticket being "Zero out" which means his ticket back to China is no longer valid. The reason is that he did not finish his travel from Chicago to OH. I tried to explain the situation to them, but they just say that's the rule.

Anyone here know what I can do? Any suggestions are welcome. very appreciate for you help.
