can not afford the mortgage

Dear helpers,
My father is in the finance crisis now. He can not afford his mortgage, and my brother and I want to help him. Can we pay mortgage for him?Is there going to have any trouble of our tax payment? Can we pay the mortgage monthly or pay it off once? We are live in CA.
