If there is no child involved, you can do it yourself. maybe have final documents reviewed by a lawyer or paralegal. family court website should have all the forms available. www.nolo.com has a good book regarding that as well. family court clinic (ask family court) is a good place to seek help as well.
general steps: (not accurate as I am not a lawyer).
1) check out the following, it has all the forms as well. http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp/family/custody/programs.htm
2) file petition to disolution of marriage, with your financial declaration. get a court date.
3) serve the paper to other party on time.
other party need to file response and same declaration on time as well.
4) court may ask you to go to mediation. try to get written agreement on how to divide your property. no blame on each other. the court will not take that.
5) hope everything goes well. the judge will sign the paper and they become legal document.
