This is a very tricky question and need to be answered by somebody who knows immigration law very well. Personally you can not receive income from other source other than you are permitted. So you should not.

However if you invest stock market and receive dividends or capital gain, nobody cares.

So you are getting conflict stories. I would not test the law.
