No written statement is better than they fabricate something. So get your story together without exaggerate and call your insurance. They are the one that is going to look after your interests.

I have seen situation that insurance does not agree with the police report and refused to pay. So the best results is to win the insurance claim.

Like the previous discussion that you have very good chance to win insurance claim and have the kids' insurance pay for your expenses.
