How long can a US Citizen stay in China and still keep up with t

A friend of mine's son was born in USA and is in China now, both of the parents are Chinese Citizen. The boy has USA passport and has been stayed in China for about year and half. Boy will be 2 years old pretty soon. How long can the boy stay in China and still keep up with the USA citizenship?
