I have to warn you that the court clerk is not trained in interpreting the law. so don't think of their words too highly. I would do some research before I make my arguments to the judge. most states have their traffic statute on-line. you can read it and try to make sense of it, see if you can find a bona fide reason to contest the ticket, and see what the maximum penalty would be if you are found guilty.
also remember, anything you say could be used against you. so be extremely careful. if possible, don't bring out the fact you had a previous ticket. I personally think the drug-usage excuse would hurt your case as well.
strongly suggest you have a lawyer to make the arguments for you instead of you doing it yourself.
