請求單身老貓: Should they marry in USA again?

A couple of my friends married in China 10ys ago and immigrant to US 5years ago. The man went to back to China after landing in US but kept his green card by backing in US every 6months. They divorced in China 4ys ago but then they decided back together for kid's sake after 1year, but was never officially married again. Now the woman is applying the US citizenship, can she apply as married? because they always file the tax as joint-married. Is that true many state don't recognize foreign divorce?
