To my experience if you work in the USA, hiring a lawyer will protect your future. If your case wins, your company will be very very very careful with your situation. They won't fire or lay off you in a easy and casual manner.

Based on what you declared, your situation is tough to make a judge since you think you did a good performance job and company did not recognize it.

What you can do is talking with your manager's boss to figure out what was wrong with your job. Don't complain your manager. Just listen carefully. You can figure out why company tried to kick you out.

No company would like to hire a long-term illness employee. They will find a way to let you go but it is not easy. A successful lawyer will help you stay in the company to your all life.
