Is there any tax for case settle fee?

２００７年我的一個表妹得到４萬多美金的案子調解費。不知在２００８年的報稅是否她需要對這４萬多美金交稅？ 如果需要交？要交多少？有什麽辦法她可以必免交這部份的稅嗎？如果她把這筆錢放到教育基金裏，是否能省稅？
