unfortunately, you sound like the traffic delayed the departure to another AA. It should not become AA's problem. I don't think AA would pay the cost for staying overnite.

Your nephew's situation is very common nationwide.

Most time the delayed airline will arrange you board to the other partners; however, it might be more than 1 stop.
