Section 141 3/4 of the California Vehicle Act: "Any person who as a guest accepts a ride in any vehicle moving upon any of the public highways of the State of California, and while so riding as such guest receives or sustains an injury shall have no right of recovery against the owner or driver or person responsible for the operation of such vehicle."

First, make sure the accident happened on public highway, not private road so that the above code is applicable. Second, unless you are willful in causing the accident or under influence of drugs/alcohol, I don't see why you should be held liable. Third, even if the above statute is held inapplicable, your lawyer should argue assumption of risk.
