I think if you don't have a contract, it's probably go month to month, so the landlord could ask you to leave giving you 1 month notice. did he do that? If not, then it's his fault. It's against the law that he come to the house without 24 hour notice. Some contract says the premises is only for the people who listed on the contract, but no sublet and all guest stay there over 60 days needs owner's consent. That means your relative needs to notify owner and get permission that you are going to stay there.
I suggest you to find another place. There are a lot of units vacant now after the holidays. check craigslist.
