If you leave it is almost sure the property owner will send it to the collection agency and eventually report to credit bereau. It will show in your credit report forever if you do not pay it. Even if you decide to pay at last, it will still show (forget the name but it is not outstanding or delinquent) and remain there for another 6 or 7 years.
If you plan on coming to US in the future, then you better settle it.
