Forgot one thing. Let's say the police did write response and the judge finds you guilty, you can tell the court "I don't like the outcome and I want a new trial". You will be granted a new trial with new date and a new judge. There is nowhere else in the criminal law that you can do the same. It is not an appeal, just a new trial.
