meritricious relationship is protectable, but you need a lawyer to deal with your situation. The man will be paying for, at least, child support. That's not the problem, and he will be paying just as if the child is legitimate. (In fact, I would bet that the child will be adjuged legitimate by the court. Child's legitimacy does not depend on the validity of the marrige.)
