The National Domestic Violence Hotline, opened in February 1996, is a resource available to victims of domestic violence 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. The National Domestic Violence Hotline was as part of the milestone legislation of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which was passed by Congress in 1994. With a database of more than 4,000 shelters and service providers across the United States, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Hotline provides callers with information they might otherwise have found difficult or impossible to obtain. In fact, for approximately 60 percent of the callers, calling the Hotline is their first step in finding safety from the violence plaguing their lives.

Currently, more than 15,000 callers reach out to Hotline every month for crisis intervention, referrals and general information about domestic violence. This year, the Hotline is nearing its one-millionth call answered. Bilingual staff and a language line are available for every non-English speaking caller. Deaf abused women can also find help at the Hotline by calling the TTY line at 800/787-3224.
