#1: tell HD manager that you are afraid of going to walk on that carpet anymore, tell them to send expert to fix the problem IMMEDIATELY and re-exam the entire project. Give them no more than 3 days to come, else you will seek for other professional to do the work and bill to HD.
Do NOT ask for money now.

#2: Wait until they verify it's their fault, ask for refund and the medical bill. This is at least what you deserved for. If they accept it, they will make this as a settlement, which means you cannot sue them anymore.

#3 Most likely, they will say it's the sub-contractor's responsibility... blah blah blah. Then seek for a lawyer, sue all of them: HD, sub-contractor and whoever you can think about. Tell lawyer that you have been suffered for so long, now afraid of walking, especially that piece of carpet... even waring shoe does not make you feel comfortable... blah blah blah.
