If you received the green card through the marriage with a US citizen, the green card is conditional. But, if the marriage is more than two years when you applied for the green card, you can get a permanent card direcly. You will not need the advance proval for travel, you can get back with the conditional green card. With a conditional green card, you can work without an EAD card.
