if you can go to DC yourself, you can get your passport renew same day, if you send a mail, the passport should return back to you in 2 weeks,

also if you can get the receipt notice of your h1 extension before the date of your h1 expires, you can continue working for 285 days if it is still pending, so i do not think there is any problem.
