post-doctor position, H1-B visa

A professor in a university plans to give me an offer (post-doctor position,
H1-B visa). He did not ask me to provide any references. Can I get an H1-B visa without references? I was ever told at least 3 references are needed to apply for an H1-B visa. I have a Ph.D degree (USA).
