Every state has its own statute to claim minor status. Majority of the states set it up at 18. If he involved in a car accident you will be vicariously liable for the damage, until he reaches majority. If you are too concerned about the this, what you can do is to go to court and get your kid emancipated so that there would be no liability for you.

In most civil cases minors are protected. For example, if your kid bought an airline ticket and went to NY, as long as he paid for it with credit card, he could get his money back, without any liability. In cirminal law most states have set that kids below 7 are not criminally liable, 7-14 are handled by juvenile court and beyond 14 they would be treated as adults.
