If he is involved in a civil wrong, such as car accident, or even statutory offenses such as speeding tickets, as long as you are not acting in concert, that is, aiding, encouraging in the furtherance of the wrong, you will not be liable.
If he is involved in a criminal wrong, such as using the car to transport contrabands, you may be vicariously responsible if you know he would do that but consciously disregard the risk. That is the ostrige rule.
