Is there any written agreement? If not, then the agreement is voidable by statute of frauds.
I would not think any lawyer is so negligence not to sign a formal agreement. Still, employment contract is contract at will, even if it specifies terms. You can get out any time you want by giving a notice within reasonable time or whatever the agreement says. You can not get your money, however, because the lawyer can claim that he did lots of things on your behalf and that he was in detrimental reliance on the agreement and you are estopped to claim the money.
