A.  Your potential recoverage damages are

1. medical expense.  Majority of this goes to your health insurance because they paid for most of your medical expense.  You can get your copay and deductible reembursed.

2. lost income. for days you and your husband take days off work to see doctors and treatments.

3.  pain and suffering.   For minor injury, it is 3 to 5 times the medical expense.

4.  lost of consortium, this means deprivation of the benefits of a family relationship due to injuries.  You said "夏天的計劃全部泡湯"  your husband can ask for damages for canceled vacation plan etc.

B.  How you ask for damages

Best chance to get your money is to talk to the home owner insurnace of the dog owner.  Insurance company will always pay out money when it is legally reasonable.  Talk to the dog owner and ask for their home owner insurance (or renter's insurance if they rent).

C. About engaging a lawyer.

Any money you got (1) lawyer takes 1/3, (2) reemburse health insurance for their payment to your medical bills.  So let's say your medical bill is $10K,  and you ask for pain and suffering of $50K, that's totally $60K.   But insurance company probably will haggle down to $30K.  Then your lawyer takes 1/3, (10K) your health insurance company has to get their $10K medical bill, and you'll leave with $10K left over.

However, if the insurance company only pays you 20K, your lawyer takes 1/3, ($6.66K), your insurance takes $10k (medical bill), you'll be left only $3.33K.   That's not ideal.

Just keep this in mind when you get a lawyer and keep the expectation in line.
