personal injury or criminal?

Dear friends,

i was stabbed by a cazy guy who using kinfe when I was protecting my wife in USA.
This guy was already put in jail and was bailed out today. Both of us need to appear in the court. I was received a summon for i was hitting his chest although i was self protect, and i need to explain in the court.

I have two questions, one is if i find attorny, which category i will find, personal injury or criminal case attorny???

2. if I dont want to sue this stupid guy, I only want to get him to pay for my loss, can we solve it outside court? I mean I dont want to put this stupid guy in jail, i only want to get paid for my loss, can we do that? if i will not sue him. we used to be a good friends. But both of us have to appear in the court, can i ask judge to not sue him? do i must find a lawyer???
