*** This is not an official government communication or legal advice ***

The new Canada Emergency Response Benefits (CERB) will provide a taxable benefit of $2,000 per month during the period March 15 to October 3, 2020.

According to the Government’s website, you will be able to apply to the CERB if you are:

  • A worker who must stop working due to COVID19 and do not have access to paid leave or other income support.
  • A worker who is sick, quarantined, or taking care of someone who is sick with COVID-19.
  • A working parent who must stay home without pay to care for children that are sick or need additional care because of school and daycare closures.
  • A worker who still have their employment but are not being paid because there is currently not sufficient work and their employer has asked them not to come to work.
  • A wage earner and self-employed individual, including contract worker, who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance.

You must stop working for at least 14 consecutive days within the four-week period for which you apply and during that 14-day period you must not receive any income from employment or self-employment, Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, or any other benefits for pregnancy or parental leave. You are not eligible for the CERB if you quit your job voluntarily.

You must also be 15 years old, a resident in Canada, and have a total employment income of at least $5,000 in 2019 or in the 12-month period before you applied for CERB.

The CERB is different than Employment Insurance (EI). If you are already receiving EI, you will continue to receive EI and should not apply to the CERB. If your EI benefits end before October 3, 2020 and you are still unable to return to work because of COVID-19, you can apply for the CERB.

If you meet the above criteria, you will be able to apply for the CERB at the beginning of April 2020. You will be able to apply through the CRA MyAccount secure portal, your secure My Service Canada Account or over the phone.
