If you filed Legal separation or you live apart for more than 6 months during the year, you are considered as single or head of household. Otherwise, you are married.

1. IRS didn't come to your friends does not mean they will not come for you.

2. No matter who prepares your return, you have to sign your name on the return too. If there is a problem, you will definitely be reponsible for, although your accountant might be responsible too.
