tax question: stock

Hi:

I bought stock of company A 5 years ago with $10 per share. The stock went down to $2 over the 5 years course.

However, company A splits into company A and B. Now I have stocks of company A and B. Last year (2004), company B forced me to sell the stock (involuntary). Company B just gave me money for the stocks.

So for the tax purpose, what is the cost base of my company B’ stock. I did not get the stock from nothing.
