In general, those medical records belong to you and you have a right to get a copy from the hospital.
Your case is quite common for any Surgery Department. Things could go wrong in many ways, that's why we have to do reserach to find out a good surgeon in particular. If you went to a teaching hospital, more likely you were at hands of those fellows.
