Even if you worked illegally, you still can, and should, pay income tax. IRS and INS (now CIS) are two different government agencies with no communication between one and the other. In other words, IRS will not report you to the INS for your illegal status. The law allows those who have no SSN, in other words, illegal workers, to pay tax. You can get a Tax Identification number from the IRS and use that number to pay your income tax. Paying income tax would benefit your future adjustment of immigration status because you have proof that you can support yourself.
