Frankly if he uses your money

for his illegal activity you will be responsibale for it especially if you just send a personal check. You sure understand what the sponsorship is. It is fine if he uses only for his own living. Remember some people in USA got into trouble for donating charity because their money was eventually used for some terrorist activity without their awareness.
