If you have insurance, you only pay your deductible, your insurance company will pay the rest.

If you don't have insurance, ooops.  But you can just tell him you don't have insurance.  His insurance will pay for the damage, and you will pay him his deductible, that way he's not spending his money so he won't sue you. His insurance company might come after you, or they might not, it depends on whether your case worth their while. 

Either way you are only paying the deductible, for now.   Just bite the bullet, face the music, it's not the end of the world.
