I think what you get from your attorney is scare.
This is a very small thing but if you are not a citizen, you will face deportation. I know a person from Shanghai got deported just for an arguement and subsquently pushed each other(like we can often find in our montherland today) during a lunch. It could be ok before 911 after plea agreement with DA.

Nowadays,any crimal conviction will be refered to check immigration status and the consequence being not a citizen could be severe.
