Several months ago, we asked for help with applying for legal guardianship for my nephew. Thanks to 單身老貓 for your advice -- It is easier than what we thought.
Background: my nephew comes to USA to pursue his high school diploma. Since his parents are still in China, my wife and I need to apply for legal guardianship. Here is what we did:
1) Through an e-mail, we obtained all documents needed for guardianship applications from the county court.
2) We did not hire an lawyer. Since we only apply for guardianship of a person not a property, it is super easy.
3) We were advised to choose one person between me and my wife to apply. Since my wife's work schedule is flexible, she applied.
4) After paying the fees, obtaining a tempory gurdianship, having an interview at home and court hearing, my wife is now a legal guardian for my nephew. It took about 5 weeks.
