Child Travel Internationally

My child is coming back from China with my friend, should I prepare any legal document? My attorney said nothing except passport is expected. Someone said a notarized power of attouney is needed by CBP, it is too late for me to mail the notarized document,  I just faxed a copy, does anyone have similar experiecne with CBP?
