What said MAY only be true in non-community state. Most states in US are community property state, once a couple is married, their properties are shared by each other, regardless when they are acquired. The only way to avoid this is to sign prenup agreement. However, also remember prenup agreement is also subject to court discretion during divoice. Unreasonable prenup agreement can be overturned.
