what a drama! the court will appoint a lawyer at no cost to your friend for such a serious charge. Thus, unless your friend really wants to and can afford a top-notch lawyer, he may have to wait while in jail.
If you really want to help, probably you can contact NJ section of ACLU, maybe they would be interested in taking this case; it sounds like their line and their lawyer would defend your friend pro bono if they actually take the case.
