If I was you, I would go to EEOC to complain it as soon as possible. Based on some law, the company can not fire you during the investigation term. If you figh early, you may get what you should get. Othervice, according to what you said and my experience, I beleive the higher level manager would never forgive you. My suggestion is to collect all evidences and look for help from EEOC.
