Holiday season is close. Many of us will travel during the final two months of the year and most of us will rely on gps and do not have a built in gps in the car. One thing you need to be aware is that it is ILLEGAL in California to use a suction cup to mount the gps on windshield. That includes the front side, backside, and side windshield. The same thing goes for gpa, radar detector, iphone, or even a sticker on the windshield other than put there by the car vendor.
If you use gps, you can consider different options such as vent mount, lighter mount, dash mount, or others but do not put them on the windshield. If you do, you may get ticketed in the state. Minnesota has a similar law.
