I helped friend in this case

They brought $17,000 without declaratio and got caught in the customs. Serveral days later, they received the froms for them to plea. I wrote the letter for them and explained why they did not declare...
I admitted the mistake and asked for liniency.
The most important thing is to prove your money is clean!!!
Eventually, they got all the money back!
