If I could ever have a chance to do it again, I would

1. be aware of which court house this divorce is going to be filed.

2. go to that court house, most of family court provide self help service, utilize this service to find where you are standing at.

3. you may be requesting a list of attorneys, and to save time, you may ask the legal clerk of the family court of the top ten of attorneys in the county.

4. study the background of each potential attorneys you may end up using:

which school he was graduated
how many years of service in his field
any rewards received
which bar associated he's registered
besides divorce case what else area he's into (like malpractice legal service, this is rare that divorce combines with malpractice, but still exist, this would be ideal)
how long has he/she been with this county.
do they have any good testimonies

You value these data and narrow down to few attorneys that you may want to talk with about your case. They usually give you 30 to 60 minutes free consultation. Utilize these free consulting time to quickly evaluate if this attorney is the one you want.

Work with your attorney closely. Once hired, he/she's under your command. You have to tell him/her what you want him/her to do, not the other way round. They are the means to help realize what you want in legal world.

Hope this helps.
