It is really a good way.
And also, if you do not have the strong background, you should emphasize the different aspects of your current work/research to demonstrate how you solved the issues or barriers which impeded the current research work, and how each aspect benifits or will benefit the national interest and other people's research.
Evidence such as help for other's troubleshooting, guide for other people's work in your lab or university/institute, and technical help requestedd by others via Email etc will count to demonstrate your ability to solve the problem and you are superior to your peers.
Just imagine any help you provided in your area for others will count.
